Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tehani's Hula Colorado have a dress code?

In order to create the most ideal environment for learning we ask that all students wear non distracting clothing items. Absolutely no jeans or clothing that make it difficult to see feet or knees or arms. Students with long hair must be pulled back off of face preferably in a bun or pony tail if student has longer than shoulder length hair.. All shoes need to be removed and neatly lined up by the door at the beginning of class as we dance barefoot. We expect all students to either have a Pa'u (if in Hula) or a Pareo (if in the Polynesian class). Please ask either Noelani or Kainoa for purchasing info. If you have further questions please e-mail us at Tehanishulacolorado@gmail.com

What class should I take?

If you are unsure of which class to enroll in, we would be happy to help! Please give us a call or e-mail Tehanishulacolorado@gmail.com

What if my student or I have to miss a class?

We understand that things happen and we will miss you! Please inform your instructor of your expected or unexpected absence before scheduled class. Students that miss a class due to illness or other personal reasons are expected to learn missed choreography by the next class they attend. We do not prorate tuition or issue refunds for any missed classes.

How does payment work?

We take ACH, checks, or cash for payment. All payments are due by the 1st of every month. Tuition payments are non-refundable.

Do you offer any discounts?

We do! We offer great discounts for students that take more than one class with us. You will get 10% off when you take a second class and 15% off when you take a third class.  We also offer a 10% family discount that is offered when two or more members of the same family household enroll with Tehani's Hula Colorado.  Please understand that family discounts are available for immediate family members only and the 10% family discount on each subsequent dancer will only apply if there is not already a multi-class discount in place.  *Discounts only apply to tuition.

What if I just want to drop in whenever I can?
Due to smaller class sizes, our mission to promote team work, and our ultimate goal, most of our classes require more commitment. We learn intricate choreography and rely on our Hula Ohana to be with us every class that they sign up for so we can dance as one. Being committed to the entirety of our seasons are key to our success.

Does Tehani's Hula Colorado preform?

Absolutely! We believe this is something so beneficial and fun for everyone. For our 2024 season, we will be doing multiple festivals and hosting recitals to show off our students progress. More information to come!

We also offer professional Polynesian shows where we visit various islands of the South Pacific, bringing you an authentic, exciting, and fun experience.

What are Tehani's Hula Colorado's expectations for students who are taking classes?

During sessions, students are expected to:

  • Arrive BEFORE class starts to get settled and stretched if needed

  • Behave in a polite manner

  • Always show respect to your instructors and Kokua (assistants).

    • Kumu hula should be referred to by their title, “Kumu,” or by the acceptable honorific or title of “Uncle” or “Auntie.”

    • Please remember to always respect your “hula elders,” (aunties, uncles, other Kumu and their assistants.)

    • Treat your Hula sisters and brothers who have more experience in this halau than you do with respect. The respect will be returned.

    • When your Kumu or instructor is speaking or showing an example, please remain quiet and pay attention.

    • Students are expected to listen and we discourage unnecessary talking.

      • If a student is causing disruption to others’ learning they may be asked to leave the lesson.

  • We expect all students to learn and practice what you are taught so that you can keep up with your class.

    • Practice, practice, practice.

    • Listen and learn from what is being said or demonstrated. You will benefit from paying attention. Any unacceptable behavior from students and/or parents/carers will not be tolerated. Unacceptable behavior by pupils may result in exclusion from current and/or further activities. Parents or family members may be banned from premises, events and/or performances.

  • Respecting the space we are holding classes.

    • Before and after class all students should help to close the halau by clearing away leftover water bottles/trash/sweeping/etc.

    • Always take off your shoes before you enter the dancing area in the halau. (lining up shoes by door)

  • Respecting all things we use in halau.

    • Handle your hula attire with respect: hula pa‘u are considered to be a sacred garment, and should not be treated casually or carelessly. Your hula implements and costumes should be handled in the same manner.

  • The Kumu’s ipu heke, pahu, and other instruments are kapu (sacred) and are not to be handled by any one other than the Kumu unless the Kumu asks you to.

  • If you visit a class that is not your own (for example, to make up a class), remain in the back of the class. Keep in mind that you are a guest when you are not in your own class.

  •  It is not appropriate to share what is learned in the halau with non-halau members, including choreography, without permission.

  • Lastly, if you eventually decide that the halau is not for you, please continue to show your respect by doing one or all of the following

    • (1) let your Kumu know you have decided to leave.

    • (2) let your Kumu know if you intend to study at another halau.

    • (3) please inform the new kumu where you've been studying.
